Dear Edgemont Community,
I’m pleased to share that the Town of Greenburgh has confirmed that construction of the long-awaited Henry Street sidewalk and ADA-access project at Old Army Road will begin this Wednesday, October 7.
This project is the result of sustained advocacy by the Edgemont Community Council to address the deteriorating stairs at Henry Street and provide a safer, more accessible pedestrian connection to Old Army Road.
The project will replace the existing stairs at the end of Henry Street with an ADA-compliant ramp, improving access to Old Army Road and providing a safer and more accessible route for Seely Place students and families, residents using strollers or wheelchairs, and other pedestrians.
Construction is expected to last approximately three weeks. Beginning at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, after morning school drop-off, Henry Street will be closed to through vehicular traffic while the project is underway.
During construction:
– Residents who live on Henry Street will still be able to leave their homes traveling westbound, but vehicles will not be able to exit Henry Street eastbound onto Old Army Road.
– The westbound lane closest to the construction area will be used for construction and staging.
– The eastbound lane, farther from the construction area, will be reserved for pedestrian traffic.
– Jersey barriers will be installed to separate and protect pedestrians from the construction and vehicle areas.
– Greenburgh Police traffic officers will be on site Wednesday morning to assist with implementing the closure and ensure it is established safely and in accordance with the approved traffic-control plan.
I know the temporary closure will be an inconvenience, particularly for residents who regularly use Henry Street to access Old Army Road and Seely Place. Please plan accordingly and allow additional time for alternate routes during the approximately three-week construction period.
Once completed, the new ADA-compliant connection will be a significant and lasting improvement for pedestrian safety and accessibility in our community.
Thank you to the Town’s Engineering Department, Greenburgh Police Department, Town Board, and everyone who has worked to move this project forward. I also want to thank the residents in the immediate area for their patience during construction.
As always, please feel free to reach out to the ECC with any questions or concerns.
