This one didn’t last long either.
After only two years in operation at its brand new 15,000 square-foot location at the Crossroads Shopping Center on Tarrytown Road, Chef Central, which calls itself the “culinary superstore,” announced this week that its Greenburgh store will be closing.
Chef Central had moved to the Crossroads Shopping Center in the fall of 2013 after having occupied a 21,000 square foot site in Hartsdale next to the Fountain Diner since 2003.
Signs announcing the Chef Central closing said the store was offering 20-60% off on everything inside, including cookware, cutlery, bakeware, small electric appliances, kitchen tools and store fixtures.
Chef Central had only two retail locations, one here in Greenburgh, and the other in Paramus, N.J. It also sells its merchandise online.
The closing of Chef Central comes at the same time as Mrs. Green’s Natural Market announced the closing this week of its Hartsdale store on Central Avenue, which is having a 50% off sale. The Edgemont A&P, also on Central Avenue, is also closing this week.
After it it opened in Hartsdale in 2003, Chef Central received rave reviews from foodies throughout the New York metropolitan area for its extensive offering of high-end household culinary goods, as well as its on-site cooking classes for adults and children conducted in its demo kitchen.
Chef Central’s retail operation in Greenburgh presumably fell victim to competition from online suppliers (including Chef Central’s own website) which offered the same kitchen supply merchandise and a wider inventory at a substantial discount from what it would normally cost at Chef Central’s retail location. In addition, for those unwilling to shop online, much of the same merchandise was also being offered at large discount chain stores nearby, such as Target, Costco, Walmart and Bed Bath & Beyond.
