NYS Awards to the Town of Greenburgh $3,859,742 for Pedestrian Improvements Along Old Army Road

Dear Edgemont Community,

I am excited to share that on Thursday, June 20th, 2024 Governor Kathy Hochul announced that a Federal Highway Administration (FHA) Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) grant in the amount of $3,859,742 has been awarded to the Town of Greenburgh for pedestrian improvements along Old Army Road, including sidewalks, ramps, and crosswalks. These improvements will enhance connectivity to Edgemont Jr./Sr. High School, Seely Place Elementary School, the Scarsdale Metro North Station, and the Central Avenue corridor.

This was a direct result of the advocacy efforts of the Edgemont Community Council, including the October 2023 ECC Traffic and Safety Report which identified Old Army Road as a priority corridor for pedestrian safety improvements, and the collaboration between the Town of Greenburgh and the ECC, which included the ECC soliciting community feedback in support of the grant application the Town submitted in January 2024 to New York State for Old Army Road pedestrian safety improvements. 69 letters of support submitted by the community were included with the grant application.

As part of the TAP Grant requirements, the Town of Greenburgh will contribute $964,935 towards the project, representing 20% of the total project cost of $4,824,677.

TAP grants are administered by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and implemented by local governments. Next steps for the Town will be to enter into contract with NYSDOT and to prepare an RFP for surveying and engineering design, working towards potential construction beginning in 2026. The project design process will include outreach to the community, which the ECC will assist in facilitating at that time.

Thank you to Community Development & Conservation Commissioner Garrett Duquesne and the Town Board for their partnership throughout this process. I look forward to continuing to advance this initiative and working together on advancing other traffic, safety, and quality of life improvements for the community.

Sincerely,
Dylan F. Pyne
President, The Edgemont Community Council
