Dear Edgemont Community,
We have just received another update from the Town of Greenburgh regarding the recent water main break on Central Avenue.
Town officials have confirmed that the location of the break was identified and that a 14-foot section of a 20-inch diameter cracked water main was replaced. This was a significant repair completed under challenging conditions.
The areas impacted by this break include streets east of the Sprain Brook Parkway and west of Central Avenue, north of Jackson Avenue and south of Underhill Road; streets east of Central Avenue and west of the Bronx River Parkway, south of Round Hill Road/Edgemont Road and north of Wind Cliff; and the Central Avenue corridor between Underhill Road/Old Army Road and Marion Avenue. Residents who experienced little or no water pressure and live near these locations were likely affected.
Water service is now being gradually restored, and it may take several hours for pressure to return to normal. Pressure is being increased slowly to avoid placing stress on the system and to prevent additional water main breaks. Our understanding at this time is that the system is still building pressure as restoration continues.
Residents may also notice fire hydrants releasing water at various locations throughout the neighborhood through tonight and into the morning. This is a normal and intentional part of the system stabilization process. Hydrants are being used to help regulate flow, release trapped air, remove water bubbles, and prevent pressure from building up as service is fully restored.
The Boil Water Advisory issued by the Westchester County Health Department remains in effect. Residents in affected areas should continue to boil all tap water at a rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or washing dishes by hand. The advisory does not apply to bathing, washing clothes, or using a dishwasher.
The Health Department must test and retest the water before issuing an all-clear. The Town has advised that this process may take three to four days, though the Health Department is expediting testing. Residents should continue boiling water until an official notice confirms that the advisory has been lifted.
I extend my sincere appreciation to the Department of Public Works and Water Department staff for their tireless efforts to locate and repair the water main break, and to the police officers and other personnel who worked to keep our community safe throughout this incident.
We appreciate the community’s patience as the Edgemont Community Council has worked over the past 36 hours to gather as much information as possible and share timely updates with residents. The information shared reflects what has been provided to us directly by the Town of Greenburgh.
The Edgemont Community Council will continue to share any further updates as they are provided to us.
Sincerely,
Dylan F. Pyne
President, The Edgemont Community Council
