Edgemont Residents Encouraged to Volunteer for the School Board Nominating Committee

Looking to help the community? The Edgemont Community Council (ECC) encourages all residents, whether or not they have children in the schools, to consider volunteering for the School Board Nominating Committee (SBNC) – or to submit names of residents they would like to suggest for membership.

About the SBNC: For nearly nine decades the SBNC has been charged with encouraging qualified residents to serve on the Edgemont School Board, and with implementing a fair and judicious means for evaluating and recommending candidates.

Work of the SBNC: The SBNC (which is sponsored by the ECC) solicits qualified residents for the Edgemont School Board, interviews nominees, and endorses candidates. The SBNC consists of two voting members and one alternate from each of Edgemont’s eight neighborhoods and from the ECC itself, as well as one student representative from Edgemont High School. Alternates participate in the process just as any other committee member and are called upon to vote in the event a voting member is disqualified or resigns. Each voting member may serve for a term of two consecutive years. The work of the SBNC begins each year in autumn and runs through the nominee interviews and Candidate Forum in the spring. Members also must attend at least three school board meetings.

Qualifications to serve: To serve on the SBNC, a person must be a resident of the school district for at least three years and not have served a consecutive two-year term within the last three years. In addition, the person must not be the president or vice president of a civic association or the spouse of a current school board member. Also, the spouse of a prior SBNC member must wait at least one year from the spouse’s date of service to join the SBNC.

Whom to contact: To volunteer for the SBNC, please contact your civic association president or the ECC by March 13 in order to be voted in at your civic association’s annual meeting. (See below for a list of civic association presidents and email addresses.) In the absence of an active civic association for your neighborhood, please contact the ECC to serve on the SBNC. I invite any interested resident to contact me directly.

The strength of the nominating process depends on our community’s willingness to invest the time and effort to serve on the SBNC. Please consider participating in this important and rewarding effort.

Sincerely,
Dylan Pyne
