ECC Advocacy Helps Secure $4.7 Million State Grant for Central Park Avenue Sidewalk and Pedestrian Safety Improvements

Dear Edgemont Neighbors,

I am excited to share that on October 14, 2026, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that a Federal Highway Administration Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant in the amount of $4.7 million has been awarded to the Town of Greenburgh for sidewalk and pedestrian safety improvements along Central Park Avenue, including several important improvements serving the Edgemont community.

The project will address approximately 6,150 linear feet of existing sidewalk gaps along Central Park Avenue, including sections within Edgemont, helping establish a continuous pedestrian connection between White Plains and Yonkers. Improvements affecting Edgemont include new sidewalks along portions of Central Park Avenue where none currently exist, a new pedestrian crosswalk at the existing traffic signal near the Hartsdale Post Office, ADA-compliant curb ramps, drainage improvements, pavement markings, and related pedestrian safety enhancements. These improvements will make it safer and more accessible for Edgemont residents to walk to local businesses, public transportation, and neighboring communities along this busy corridor.

This award follows the continued advocacy efforts of the Edgemont Community Council to improve pedestrian safety throughout our community and the collaboration between the Town of Greenburgh and the ECC, including the ECC soliciting community support for the Town’s grant application earlier this year. Thank you to the many Edgemont residents who responded to our request and submitted letters of support demonstrating the importance of these improvements to our community.

This is the second major TAP grant awarded to the Town of Greenburgh with the support of the ECC. In June 2024, the Town was awarded $3,859,742 in TAP funding for pedestrian improvements along Old Army Road, following the ECC’s advocacy and the submission of 69 letters of support from community members. That work should begin next year. Together, these two awards represent more than $8.5 million in federal funding for projects that will improve pedestrian safety and connectivity in and around Edgemont.

TAP grants are administered by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and implemented by local governments. According to the Town, construction of the Central Park Avenue improvements is anticipated to begin around 2028. The ECC looks forward to assisting with community outreach as the project advances through design and implementation.

Thank you to Community Development & Conservation Commissioner Garrett Duquesne and the Greenburgh Town Board for their partnership throughout this process, as well as Governor Hochul and NYSDOT for supporting these important improvements. I look forward to continuing to advance this initiative and working together on other traffic, safety, and quality-of-life improvements for our community.
