The Edgemont Junior Senior High School production this spring of “Urinetown” was nominated this week for six “Metro Awards.”
Once known as the Helen Hayes Awards, the Metro Awards recognize high school theatrical productions in Westchester, Rockland, Bergen and Putnam counties. A total of 46 shows were judged in 29 categories. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in White Plains on June 1.
Juniors Reed Rosenberg and Mallory Kostroff, were nominated for best supporting actor and actress for their portrayals of Officer Lockstock and Little Sally, while senior Jackie Brown was nominated for best vocal performance by female for her role as Hope Cladwell.
Senior Yujin Tsuruo received a nomination for graphic design for his extraordinary poster, program and set design. He also received a teacher nomination for technical merit.
Edgemont’s student orchestra for the production also received a nomination.
And rounding out the nominees was 2010 Edgemont graduate Danny Bernstein, who received a nomination for best director in his first outing as a director of a high school musical.
Mr. Bernstein is a musical theater composer lyricist and librettist, whose original musical “Far From Canterbury,” will have its New York City premier this August as part of the NYC Fringe Festival.
Unlike many of the other schools whose productions were recognized this year, Edgemont is not known as a regional high school powerhouse in the musical theater world. Its six nominations this year are believed to be the most Edgemont has ever received for one of its productions.
